Emma Moss, MD, began her medical education in 1930 at the University of Alabama. She transferred to the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and received her medical degree in 1935. She interned and completed her residency in pathology training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Moss was certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology and in clinical microbiology. In 1939, she was appointed the acting director of the Department of Pathology at Charity Hospital and in 1940 was named the director of pathology. She held that position for the next 30 years.

Dr. Moss progressed through the academic ranks, holding academic appointments in both the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology. She was named clinical professor of pathology and served as acting head of the LSU School of Medicine Department of Pathology. Dr. Moss joined ASCP in 1938 and served on countless ASCP committees and the Board of Directors. She was elected the first woman president for the 1955–1956 term. In becoming the first woman president of ASCP, she was also the first woman president of any major medical association. She was the only woman president of ASCP until 2001.
